Writing Groups

Last night, I was reminded of how wonderful it its to be in a writing group like River Writers . We’ve been meeting regularly now for several years to critique one another’s work. It’s an interesting process – pointing out errors and holes in plot, inconsistencies in a character’s behavior, any confusion about story, information dumps that detract, and on and on. It could be devastating to a writer’s fragile ego, but when done in a supportive atmosphere with other writers who are striving to do their best, it’s exhilarating.  And fun! We have fun developing our craft.

Growing up in a Ukrainian speaking home, I did not feel confident with the English language when it came to composition and grammar. My scholastic report cards reflected that. I got A’s in everything but English and Literature. Oh, if I could only do that now, how that would change. Writing is like any other art form; when you don’t stand in your own way, you can fly.
