One was in the air force, stationed in Northern Ireland and the other two were in the army and did battle in Italy. They returned home different men. He wore his medals with pride. There, he could have a few beers with other guys who understood what he&#8217;d gone through. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Poem of Remembrance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I read the following in&nbsp;<strong>Maclean\u2019s magazine<\/strong><em>&nbsp;Nov. 23, 2009.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOn a peaceful mission in an Afghan village, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/society\/life\/the-iron-soldier-how-trevor-greene-learned-to-walk-again\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Captain Trevor Greene<\/strong><\/a> was sitting in a patch of shade with a circle of elders, his helmet off, when a teenager snuck up behind him, and buried an axe into his head, splitting his skull and his brain almost in half. &#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also learned that his wife and the medical staff in a Nanaimo hospital were helping him put his body together again. I was so moved by what Captain Greene went through, I was compelled to write the following poem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Day to Remember<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">I turn on the tube\nand watch a Remembrance ceremony,\nthen hear a soldier talk of letting go\nthe hate that came with battle\u2019s harm.\nIn halting words he shares the time\nhe sat on sand in a circle of men,\na few from his company\nand some from the so-called foe.\nHe sat there listening,\ntrying to make sense of a fight with no end,\n\u2018til a man with an axe struck him hard\non the back of his head.\nNo Call of Duty game here,\nno quick recovery,\nyet his faith in peace stayed,\ndespite an enemy\u2019s blow.\n\u00a0<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dianastevan.com\/uk\/2014\/life\/freedom-is-not-free-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freedom is not Free.<\/a> <\/strong>We owe so much to the brave men and women who are willing to sacrifice their lives for peace in their country.
